Eastern Illinois Slips Past Baseball, 5-4

March 11, 2003

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Eastern Illinois scored four runs in the top of the sixth to rally past Jacksonville University, 5-4, Tuesday night at Alexander Brest Field. Junior rightfielder Rob Hudson (Garden City, Mich.) led the Dolphins by going 3-for-5 with a double, while senior outfielder Chad Hauseman (Pottstown, Pa.) hit his fifth home run of the season.

EIU (3-5) scored an unearned run in the first, but the Dolphins answered back with a pair in the third to take a 2-1 lead and Hauseman's homer in the fifth put the Dolphins up, 3-1. Freshman left-hander Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) was solid in his first career start, allowing only one earned run on two hits and striking out four in 5.0 innings. Junior Dustin Bolton (Calgary, Alberta) took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in two-third of an inning in the sixth. EIU's Jared Marshall got the win despite allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits, walking four and striking out five in 5.0 innings.

EIU's Marcus Jackson led off the sixth with a single to chase DeVries, but Bolton walked a batter and gave up a two-run single to Bret Pignatiello and an RBI single to Aaron Shelbourne to allow the Panthers to take a 4-3 lead. The Panthers tacked on another RBI single by Danny Jordan to stretch the lead to 5-3.

Sophomore catcher Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.) walked to lead off the sixth and Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/ACDS) hit a pop-up to the shortstop which fell for a single. Senior second baseman Robby Cichra (Plano, Texas) then drilled a triple to dead-center to score Jamieson, but Brickle was thrown out at the plate to keep the Dolphins (6-10) from tying the game.

JU missed opportunities in first inning after not scoring with the bases loaded and no outs and in the seventh when Hudson led off the inning with a single, but rightfielder Jeff Camman made an outstanding diving catch on the warning track on Clint Hart's line drive to right field and doubled off Hudson, who was already on his way to home plate, to end the inning.

The Dolphins return to action when they host 18th-ranked Notre Dame on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Alexander Brest Field. JU will be hosting the Chamber of Commerce "Business After Hours" mixer at 5:30 p.m. and all attendees will receive free admission to the game.
